The "Data Science Group" of the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences does interdisciplinary research in data science, combining the expertise and experience of several researchers with different backgrounds, such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Statistics, Mathematics, and Astronomy and Astrophysics. Our main areas of research are:

  • Data Management and Data Analytics.
  • Machine Learning and Data Mining.
  • Knowledge Representation, Ontologies, and Knowledge Graphs.
  • Uncertainty Management in Data and Knowledge.
  • Statistical Methods in Data Science.
  • Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Statistical Genetics.
  • Optimization Methods in Data Science.
  • Astronomical, Spatial and Satellite Data.

The Data Science Group gives support to the newly created "Master of Science in Data Science", which combines course work with a research-oriented thesis. We are about to start with a PhD Program in Data Science. We also offer a Professional Master in Data Science, as a form of continuous, executive education, mainly for working professionals.

Faculty Positions In Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence, and Statistics

The Faculty of Engineering and Sciences (FES) of Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI) is pleased to invite researchers to apply for up to three open-rank faculty positions in Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence, and three open-rank positions in Statistics due to start as early as March 1st, 2021.

Job description

The FES seeks candidates with demonstrated excellence in research, teaching and service and with expertise in both theory and applications of Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence. In particular, we seek candidates with any of the following research lines:

  • Neural networks/Deep learning
  • Probabilistic Graphical Models
  • Statistical relational learning
  • Optimization methods in ML
  • Statistical Learning Theory (SVMs, Kernel-based methods, ...)
  • Automated Decision Support Systems
  • Recommender systems

For Statistics, the following research areas are relevant:

  • Spatial statistics
  • Hierarchical modeling (ideally both frequentist and a Bayesian)
  • Statistical/machine learning
  • Computational statistics
  • Image and text processing
  • Causal inference
  • Statistical genetics
  • Data visualization
  • Longitudinal data
  • Bayesian statistics
  • Recommendation algorithms
  • High-dimensional statistics

Faculty members at FES are expected to teach, in Spanish and/or English, undergraduate and graduate courses related to Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, supervise theses, conduct high quality research, publish in top international journals, submit research proposals to national, international and multinational funding organizations, and participate in outreach activities. FES also encourages and welcomes technological transfer and research in collaboration with the industry and the government.
Requirements include a PhD degree in Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence/Computer Science/Statistics or a related field, and an academic productivity level that complies with the Chilean CNA accreditation board guidelines. In particular, for the Associate Professor or Full Professor position, at least seven publications in Web-of-Science indexed journals over the last five years, and experience leading research grants and guiding postgraduate students. Experience in academic administration is a plus.
At FES, we believe that diversity broadens our research scope and enhances the quality of our education. Hence, we highly encourage women, international scholars, and minorities to apply for these positions.
